If they were, their own ports back in the day would have featured such options, and they didn't. These games were never meant to be played with infinite credits/lives. If you think that they were meant to be played on freeplay, I don't think you understand that arcade machines were not built for home use. Yes they did, for testing and demonstration purposes etc. It IS a part of the game itself, so it should be a selectable choice, otherwise, people are simply locked out of options.
